Wally Buono

Calgary Stampeders coach Wally Buono says being thrown out of a game earlier this year was one of the best learning experiences of his career. ``What happened probably was the best thing that happened,'' Buono said Friday after the Stamps' practice for Sunday's Grey Cup game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats ``It gave me a different perspective about staying calm. The good Lord taught me a lesson. He taught me about control. Too often in games it's easy to get out of control, both emotionally and verbally. I believe that cost us first place.'' (1999)

Wally Buono acknowledges quarterbacks are team leaders but balks at the notion they represent just how tough your ball club is. "I'm hoping it's not your quarterback that makes your team tough, otherwise you're a pretty soft team," said Buono, a former linebacker/punter who appeared to be taking a small dig at former pivot Ron Lancaster sitting next to him.
